Thanksgiving is also a time to indulge in our favorite meals such as potatoes, turkey, gravy, yams, pumpkin pie, roasted vegetables and lots of stuffing. However, there is usually a case of overindulging during these times and people end up with regret and guilt. This, in the long run, reduces the enjoyment and to some extent, the whole holiday experience. There is completely no need to overindulge to enjoy these delicacies.
Let us look at five ways through which you can enjoy thanksgiving in a much healthier manner.
Don’t be mean to yourself.
A lot of people tend to skip a few meals so that when the main meal comes, they indulge with all their hearts. Do not be mean to yourself. Have your lunch and breakfast as usual and ensure that you take a healthy snack about two to three hours before the Thanksgiving dinner. This will ensure that you do not eat too much at dinner time. You will be in control and you will serve wisely during dinner.
Have a lot of vegetables.
Vegetables fill up the stomach and the good thing is that they do not contain a lot of calories. You should, however, be careful not to drench them in a lot of butter or creamy sauce. It is a good idea to include three to four kinds of vegetables for people to choose from during your Thanksgiving dinner. In case you are visiting someone, you should ask if you can bring along your vegetable dish. Your plate should include at least one-third of your favorite vegetables.
Do not intend to overindulge in the hope of restricting later
This mode of thinking is kind of a relative to the ‘yo-yo dieting‘ and to be honest, it may lead to a lot of weight gain in the long run. You should serve each meal that you like moderately while also keeping in mind that you should not overstuff. This way, you are assured of not over-indulging to enjoy your Thanksgiving feast. You will also not need to restrict yourself the following day.
Do not change your activity
Just because it is a holiday, it does not mean that you should not engage in your daily activities like walking, going to the gym, or even engaging in yoga. Because it is a holiday, you can make it more fun by engaging in your activities with your family and friends.
Use a bowl or plate that is your size
Ensure that the plate you use is not too big. Our eyes are usually bigger when compared to our stomach which means that we may serve according to our eyes. We are also programmed to completely eat what we serve ourselves. Therefore, if we use a smaller plate, we are definitely on the right track to having a healthy thanksgiving.
