When one thinks of healthy fruits it is hard to envision plums. The fact however is that plums are highly nutritious and have been the topic of research for many scientists.

Plums contain a high content of unique phytonutrients called chlorogenic and neochlorogenic acid which are famous for their antioxidant properties. Plums develop from what looks like a small tree or large shrub; it widely cultivated in places such as Europe, United States, China and Japan. The fruit differs in terms of size, color and growing characteristics that depend on their country of origin.

In a recent study performed by researchers at the Agrilife Research Center, they found that plums contained important antioxidants. They discovered that when interacted with cancerous cells, the antioxidants were able to stop the growth of cancer without causing any harm the normal cells. The reddish blue pigment in some plums (anthocyanins) can protect against cancer by mopping up the dangerous free radicals. Research shows that one medium sized plum contains up to 113 milligrams of potassium. Potassium is a mineral that is well kwon for its ability to help manage blood pressure and reduce the incidence of a stroke among other heart diseases.

Prunes which are basically dried plums are rich in fibre with each prune contain one gram of fibre. Prunes are a proven way of helping one keep their bowels regular. There are many ways you can consume the prunes so as to insure their positive results, such as with yogurt, granola or just raw.

Control blood sugar

According to a research performed by the Dietitians of Canada the glycemic index of plums ranks very low. This means that eating them can help you manage your blood sugar as well as minimize the chances of getting type 2 diabetes.

Improve memory

Prunes are rich in antioxidants. According to research eating three to four prunes can help you neutralize the free radicals in cells that may cause any damage to your memory.

Strengthening bones

Some studies performed show that prunes can help restore the bone mass. This is important in the prevention of osteoporosis which leads to weak bones. Eating about 10 prunes everyday can help the body have a higher bone mineral density.

Improve eyesight

Plums are also rich in vitamin A and beta carotene. These two are important in that they help improve your eyesight and protect you against eye infections. Research shows consuming 3 more servings of prunes everyday can counter the effects of ARMD (age-related-macular-degeneration). ARMD is the main loss of eye vision in older adults.

Increases the absorption of iron

Plums are rich in vitamin C which is responsible for increasing iron absorption in the body. Iron and vitamin C are needed in the body for the repair of tissues and for a strong immune system.

Vitamin C is important in: reducing chances of getting a cold or flu, minimizing the effects of recurrent ear infections and prevents oxidation of cholesterol by free radicals. This in effect reduces the development of conditions asthma, colon cancer, rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis.
